2017 GMC Sierra Diesel New Engine

According to recent reports from several reliable sources, GM’s DMAX facility in Ohio is currently working on a next-generation Duramax engine. Namely, the new turbo-diesel is being prepared to replace the current 6.6-liter unit which is due to be discontinued by the end of 2016. By introducing the new generation of the oil-burner, GM intends to make the Silverado and Sierra Heavy Duty lineup more competitive when it comes to the towing and hauling capacities. It is currently third in this torque competition among HD pickup trucks, lagging behind its Ram and Ford rivals. Apart from that, the upcoming diesel engine will be focused on meeting ever more stringent emissions regulations. In any case, expect the 2017 GMC Sierra Diesel to bring all sorts of substantial improvements.

2017 GMC Sierra Diesel Specs

Although the new-generation Duramax has been anticipated for quite some time, we’re still awaiting detailed engine specifications. There have been numerous rumors over the last few years, including a possibility that the new diesel will come with an aluminum block, a compound turbocharger, steel pistons, as well as several other exotic components. Thus far, we’ve been able to confirm that its fuel system will be produced by Denso, although more detailed information have yet to surface. Unfortunately, we still don’t know whether GM plans to go for an aluminum block or compacted graphite iron (CGI). In case the company opts for the aluminum block, that would mean certain weight savings and thus an improved fuel economy. On the other hand, steel pistons would contribute to enhanced durability. In terms of torque numbers, some even suggest that the 2017 GMC Sierra Diesel is likely to get close to 900 lb-ft. One thing is certain though, the much-anticipated new Duramax is going to outdo the current 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel that delivers 398 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque.
