A diesel-powered Tundra has been anticipated by pickup truck enthusiasts for years. According to reliable sources, it seems that the 2017 model is due to receive the same Cummins turbodiesel V8 that has recently made its debut in the Nissan Titan. If that pans out, Toyota will finally be able to offer a more efficient truck to the buyers. Although diesel-powered trucks hadn’t been available on the US market until a few years ago, Ram’s EcoDiesel V6 started this trend of introducing fuel-efficient pickups to the world’s largest market. What is more, the 2017 Toyota Tundra Diesel is likely to be the first oil-burning model of the Japanese automaker sold in North America.
Cummins Diesel Engine
As mentioned above, the 2017 Toyota Tundra Diesel is expected to receive Cummins’s turbodiesel unit. This 5.0-liter V8 already churns out 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque inside the new Nissan Titan. The exact output figures produced by this engine inside the upcoming Tundra are still unavailable but we expect them to stay in the same range. Although the number of horsepowers will hardly impress anyone, the torque figures will make this truck one of the most appealing options in this segment. Another upside of the turbodiesel engine is its fairly low weight that doesn’t exceed 1,000 pounds. In fact, some of the engine’s components are made of lightweight materials such as the graphite-iron block, as well as aluminum heads. As for the fuel efficiency, the exact numbers are still not known but we expect the Tundra Diesel to bring a significant improvement in that area.
When it comes to the exterior styling, don’t expect the 2017 Toyota Tundra Diesel to introduce any revolutionary changes. It will carry over almost completely unchanged compared to the previous model. The upcoming Tundra will be available in three cab configurations and three-bed lengths. There will be regular-cab and double-models offered with either the standard or long bed, while the CrewMax model should come exclusively with the short bed. Depending on the cab configuration, 2017 will be able to accommodate between three and six passengers. Whereas the entry-level versions come with seats covered with standard fabric, the range-topping models get a fine leather upholstery and other high-end materials such as wood. The list of standard features includes an infotainment system comprising a 6.1-inch touchscreen display.
2017 Toyota Tundra Diesel Release Date
The official release date has yet to be announced but we expect the 2017 Toyota Tundra Diesel to hit the market sometime in late 2016.
