2017 Toyota Tundra

Speculations about the Tundra pickup truck adopting a Cummins diesel engine have been around for quite some time now. The latest reports suggest that the 2017 Toyota Tundra will be the first model powered by a turbo-diesel unit. Requests for a more fuel-efficient engine under its hood are not new and the company had already started developing a diesel-powered version before the economic crisis hit the world in 2008. Such a move doesn’t really come as a surprise since the U.S. automakers have been following this trend in the last several years. Namely, the first automaker to introduce a diesel engine to the North American market was RAM with its EcoDiesel V6. Although Toyota currently doesn’t offer diesel powertrains in any of its models sold in North America, we believe the upcoming 2017 Tundra will break the ice on that matter.

2017 Tundra Engine

According to reliable sources, the 2017 Toyota Tundra is due to receive the same 5.0-liter Cummins turbo-diesel V8 used by the latest Nissan Titan. This unit currently produces 300 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque in the Nissan Truck, which is close to the output estimated for the upcoming Tundra. Bearing in mind the fact that the engine generates impressive 500 lb-ft, it’s no wonder that many truck enthusiasts have been requesting such an option for years. What is more, the Cummins V8 even outdoes RAM’s EcoDiesel when it comes torque figures.

The recent trend of introducing diesel powertrains in the pickup truck segment was actually triggered by the announcement of even more strict CAFE regulations. Namely, the U.S. automakers will have to meet a fleet target of 54.5 mpg (4.3L/km) by the year 2025. That said, Toyota’s diesel-powered pickup truck lineup seems imminent.

Design and Features

As far as the exterior styling is concerned, the 2017 Toyota Tundra will be mostly unchanged compared to its predecessor. Expect it to come with the majority of features introduced by the thoroughly refreshed 2014 model. The Tundra will once again be offered in three cab configurations and three bed lengths. While the regular-cab and double-cab models come with either a standard bed (78.7 inches) or long bed (97.6 inches), the CrewMax version will be available exclusively with a short bed (66.7 inches). The new Tundra will be able to carry between three and six passengers depending on the cab configuration. The base models will be offered with standard fabric three-passenger seating, while the more luxurious versions turn into proper family haulers with leather upholstery and wood trims. All models will come standard with a 6.1-inch touch-screen infotainment system.

2017 Toyota Tundra Release Date

Although the official statements concerning the release date are still unavailable, we expect the 2017 Toyota Tundra to hit the showrooms in late 2016.
